Heard of Mamutu? It’s another security software by a-squared that doesn’t rely on signature to detect a malware. Mamutu monitors all active programs in real time for dangerous behavior (Behavior Blocking) and can detect new unknown Trojans, Worms, Viruses and other damaging programs (Zero-Day dangers) without daily updates. Mamutu is small but very powerful. It saves resources and does not slow the PC down. Mamutu is actually a part of a-squared Anti-Malware, but it exist as a separate product so that you can use it simultaneously with other antivirus of your choice such as NOD32, Kaspersky, Avira and etc.
You can say that Mamutu is an alternative to ThreatFire except that it cost money ($27 per year). Sorry 64-bit Windows users, Mamutu runs only on 32-bit of Windows XP, 2003/2008 Server and Vista. There are 2 processes for Mamutu which is a2service.exe taking up 9.692MB and mamutu.exe taking up 20.688MB. This is the first time I got to test Mamutu and honestly I was a little disappointed with the results.
Mamutu claims to detect injection of code into other programs, invisible installations of software and creation of Autostart entries BUT it didn’t warn me when I tried infecting my test computer with a trojan. The trojan that I used for testing has all 3 behaviors above but no idea why it did not block or warn me about it. I’ve also tried running a very destructive virus called Almanahe/JambanMu, it managed to detect “Invisible installations of software” and pops up the same warning over and over again for a few times even though I select “Block behavior”. When the warning popups has stopped, I was shocked to find that the computer has been successfully infected by the virus because task manager, regedit, cmd has been disabled and the computer was running very slowly. As for Brontok virus, it managed to block all suspicious behavior. In my opinion, I personally think that ThreatFire works better than Mamutu.
